I purchased a male betta at Pet Smart yesterday, and once I got home and put him in his new tank, I realized he had a problem. He seems very lethargic and struggles to swim to the top of the tank for air. He most lays on the bottom of the tank, almost sideways, or on his plants. When he does come to the top of the tank he swims in almost a vertical position, always keeping his head upwards, even while swimming down. The way he swims seems to remind me of the way a hummingbird would fly. After inspection, he tends to breath very heavily and has his mouth opened. Twitching it as he breathing, looking as if he is breathing through his mouth. Underneath is slightly bloated and a white color. Considering I got him yesterday, I'm unsure of his true coloration to be able to detect any problems related to fungal or bacterial growth. I would just really love to heal this poor guy up, he really is beautiful.
